Applications are now open for the Wiki Loves Earth 2024 photography competition in Nigeria! This international contest promotes natural heritage sites worldwide through Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
Event Details
Nigeria is participating in this competition for the fifth time, with the event scheduled from June 1 to July 31, 2024. In previous editions, Nigerian participants uploaded over 1,000 quality images. This is a fantastic opportunity for photographers and volunteers to showcase Nigeria’s natural beauty and contribute to a global project.
How to Participate
Everyone is welcome to join as a participant (photographer), organizational volunteer, or both. Here’s how you can get involved:
- Sign in or create a new account on Wikimedia Commons.
- Name your photos appropriately.
- Use the Upload Button at the top or Click here to upload images.
- Share your upload success on social media with the hashtags: #WLENG and #WLE2024.
- Wait patiently for the results!
Prizes
- 1st Prize: NGN 150,000
- 2nd Prize: NGN 100,000
- 3rd Prize: NGN 50,000
Other categories include:
- Best 2 images from each participating fan club and hub.
- Highest number of contributions from each participated fan club and hub.
- Top 10 contributors (by the number of photographs) will receive a WLE T-shirt.
Eligibility Criteria
- Original Work: All entries must be your own work. Avoid manipulating original images and ensure no visible watermarks.
- Upload Period: All photos must be uploaded between June 1 and July 31, 2024.
- License: All photos must be licensed under the CC BY-SA license.
- Contact: Participants must have an active email account for organizers to contact them.
- Captions and Descriptions: Required for all photos.
- Categories: Add categories to your pictures for better discoverability.
- No Duplicates: Ensure you are not uploading duplicate images.
Judging Criteria
The jury will consider the following criteria (in no particular order):
- Technical Quality: Sharpness, use of light, perspective, etc.
- Originality
- Usefulness of the Image for Wikipedia
